AFRICA STATE OF MIND is an exhibition of contemporary photography by artists from across the African continent that runs from 29 September to the 16 December 2018 ate the NEW ART EXCHANGE in Nottingham.

We have been privileged to work with the curatorial and exhibition and installation team at the New Art Exchange on many occasions, but the current exhibition has allowed us to work with artists producing a range of work & styles.

From dramatic black & white documentary photography, vibrant staged fashion work, large scale wall presentations and exterior display materials – numerous processes and materials have been required.

“Africa State of Mind, curated by Ekow Eshun with NAE, explores the work of an emergent generation of photographers from across the African continent. 16 artists from 11 different countries interrogate ideas of ‘Africanness’ through highly subjective renderings of life and identity on the continent, along the way revealing Africa to be a psychological space as much as a physical territory; a state of mind as much as a physical location. The exhibiting artists are: Emmanuelle Andrianjafy, Sammy Baloji, Raphaël Barontini, Neil Beloufa, Girma Berta, Eric Gyamfi, Kiluanji Kia Henda, Lebohang Kganye, Namsa Leuba, Michael MacGarry, Sabelo Mlangeni, Mimi Cherono Ng’ok, Musa N Nxumalo, Ruth Ossai, Athi Patra Ruga and Michael Tsegaye.

Africa State of Mind features photography that seeks to address the complexity of what it means, and how it feels, to live in Africa today.”

The external displays use a DiBond substrate with high definition UV cure print. These panels are highly durable and will remain vibrant throughout the period of the exhibition.

The large interior wall mounted pieces use a matt self adhesive wall vinyl. This is simple to install but can be removed without causing damage to the walls at the end of the exhibition, therefore minimising preparation for the next event.

The framed images were printed variously on matt archival Photo Rag stock or photo satin papers. These are mounted to foamed boards prior to being framed & hung.

We would like to thank the team at the New Art Exchange for giving us the opportunity to work with them on the production of materials for this show. We would also give credit to the good folks at Custom Frames for bearing with us on production as deadlines loomed.
