and the winner is...
The winner of the John E. Wright prize for 2010 is printmaker Sarah Kirby who exhibited two prints shown below. Sarah is a Leicester based artist who works and teaches printmaking & bookbinding at the Leicester Print Workshop
Speaking about the images ‘Mrs Griffiths' Cuckoo’ and ‘Mrs Griffiths' Starling’, Sarah commented
“These two images are inspired by a batch of black and white bookplates I picked up in a second hand bookshop in Cambridge - an 1815 edition of a natural history guide which was "mostly illustrated by Mrs Griffiths".. the birds were wonderful and having tried with no luck to find out more about Mrs Griffiths I have a picture in my mind of her engraving on the banks of far flung shores and keeping her watercolours tucked in full skirts while in some exotic location...”
Sarah’s work is produced with great skill using traditional relief printing techniques. Further examples of Sarah’s work can been seen on her website www.sarahkirby.co.uk which shows a range of work including images of contemporary Leicester landscapes, represented in a stylised & traditional manner. Many of these pieces are due to be exhibited at the New Walk Museum and Art Gallery, Leicester, 22 nd May to 4 th July.
We would like to congratulate all of the artists selected to be a part of the 2010 Nottingham City Open and we look forward to our continued sponsorship of the show in the years to come.
